Ashtanga Yoga Richmond was opened in 2006, following the tradition of ashtanga yoga as established by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. AYR currently offers traditional mysore and guided ashtanga classes, a variety of vinyasa style classes and prenatal yoga.
What is the difference between Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga?
Ashtanga yoga is a physical form of yoga that synchronizes movement with breath through a precise sequence of postures called the primary series. Each posture in the sequence is a preparation for the next, and traditionally should always be practiced in order. The intention of the practice is to cleanse, stretch and strengthen the body, as well as focus and calm the mind. AYR offers guided ashtanga classes for all levels and traditional mysore ashtanga classes.
Vinyasa yoga is an invigorating and dynamic practice in which breath and movement are linked together in a flowing sequence to create heat, flexibility, strength and awareness. There is more freedom within sequencing and each teacher’s unique approach to the practice.
